Central Hall serves as a display typeface based on The Lancastrian Hall and
Central Library in Swinton. Built with great ambition and civic pride, The Lancastrian Hall has been left abandoned by the local council since 2015. The Hall
is regarded as one of the best examples of late sixties brutalism in north-west-
ern Britain, yet after its closure, it has been left to rot.
Central Hall aims to reflect the buildings current state. The blocky shape of
the glyphs matches the imposing blocks of concrete, whilst the hollow inside
of the glyphs symbolises the now empty and inaccessible interior of the Hall.
The varied weights of the outline represent the now decaying walls.

Brief: ‘ArchiType’
You have been asked to design a bespoke typeface based on an iconic piece of architecture. The font should be linked to the building itself and could use the history, the era in which it was designed, details of the construction, materials, shape, composition, formation or the atmosphere or ‘vibe’ as its inspiration. It may even draw on the local area or community and its sense of place a to provide visual material on which to base your ideas.

Following the project, two other
students and I organised a pop-up exhibition at The Modernist. In the small
team of three, we designed and installed the pop-up ahead of a very successful
opening event.
